About the College:

Until the year 2000, the facility of higher education was not reached in North Koregaon. So the institution started ‘Shankarrao Jagtap Arts and Commerce College, Wagholi’ in June 2001 and opened the doors of higher education to students in this area. It is located in the northern part of Koregaon Taluka. It is a rural, hilly and drought-prone area. The community in this area is primarily a mass community, having weaker social and economic background. It includes small farmers, labourers and landless labourers. Due to very low income of people in this area it was not possible for boys and girls to take degree level education at the district place of Satara. Hence the parent institution has started the institution for imparting degree level education in B.A/B.Com programmes. The needy and poor boy and girl students are promoted for making career in various jobs, businesses and services by imparting education in B.A,/B.Com. programmes. By taking into account the changing needs of society and new trends in education the short term computer courses started by the institution through its computer academy have paved a new way for making career of the boy and girl students in this area.

The college runs different Career Oriented Short Term Courses like Foundational Course in English, Personality Development, Tours and Tourism, Soft Skill development, etc. for students. The girl students are highly benefitted by these courses. At present there are near about 60% girl students in this institution.

The institution consists of B.A. and B.Com degree programmes . The B.A. degree programme is on aided as well as unaided basis whereas the B.Com degree programme is on permanently unaided basis. The B.A. degree programme consists of five departments namely Marathi, Hindi, English, History and Economics. The departments of Marathi, Hindi, History and Economics are being run on aided basis whereas the department of English and the subjects of Sociology are on permanently unaided basis. The short term computer courses are self financed courses. Nearby 300 students are admitted to B.A./ B.Com. degree programmes and short term computer courses.

The institution has started these programmes by taking into account the needs of higher education of the boy and girl students in this area. The institution has well administered transparent admission system for admitting students from different socio-economic backgrounds. The curriculum prescribed by the university has been implemented by the institution and it suits to the career needs of students. The teaching-learning process adopted by the institution is totally student oriented. This process consists of engagement of regular periods subjectwise/paperwise. It also includes the teaching methods like project, group discussion, seminar, study tour, online classes, etc. For making teaching-learning process more effective and beneficial extra periods, guidance lectures, lectures of visiting/guest faculties are organized. The institution has a qualified teaching staff and it tries to promote innovative teaching. The institution follows different methods of evaluation like home assignments/oral tests/ projects/ internal exam /pre-university exam/ university annual /semester exams etc. Through projects and study tour the awareness of students about research is promoted. The participation of teachers in seminars/workshops/conferences etc. is beneficial to students. The teachers participate in research and extension activities too.

The institution is located in an ordinary rented building. Even though there are limited infrastructure facilities, the institution tries to perform maximum curricular, co-curricular and extra- curricular activities as far as possible. The library of the institution has at present 12546 books. It enables nearly 300 students to acquire updated information and knowledge. The institution maintains good and healthy academic and administrative environment while carrying out all curricular co-curricular and extra- curricular activities. The students enjoy healthy environment in the institution. The faculty members guide the students on academic and personal matters. The different committees like the grievances redressal cell, sexual harassment prevention committee, competitive exam and career cell, discipline committee etc. provide them valuable guidance for moulding their career properly and for inculcating good habits, values, discipline and customs among them. The goals and mission of the institution naturally get percolated and transmitted through the activities of different academic and administrative committees in the institution. Under lead college scheme the institution organises ten to fifteen workshops on different topics during every academic year. These workshops have proved to be highly useful for students, faculty members and even for the community in the area.

The faculty members in the institution are young enthusiastic and energetic. They belong to the age group of 30-40. They are sincere and hard working. They encourage students to participate in each and every activity as well as they themselves also participate in various refresher/ orientation courses, workshops, seminars and conferences. The administrative staff of the institution also helps the students by giving necessary supportive services in case of office work and committee activities. There is a very good co-ordination among all entities of the institution. The allocation of institutional budget helps to maintaining academic and administrative activities.

The extension activities conducted through the regular N.S.S. activities and through the N.S.S. special camps in different villages every year open a good avenue of different extension services for the benefit of neighboring community as well as students.

The college does not have its own building. Temporally we are using Zilha Parishad’s School building on rental basis. Recently, the institution has bought three and half Acres of land and the institution proposes to construct a well-equipped college building with all necessary amenities for students at the new site.
