Koregaon Education Society, Koregaon, was established on 24 March 1992 under the visionary leadership of Honorable Shankarrao Jagtap, the former Speaker of the MaharashtraLegislative Assembly. The Society was founded with a noble mission to extend the benefits of education to the economically, socially, and educationally backward sections of Koregaon Taluka in Satara District.
The guiding motto of the institution, “Dnyan, Charitrya, Susanskar Sanwardhan, Yasathi Shikshan” (Education for Knowledge, Character Building, and Cultural Preservation), reflects its holistic approach to education. The Society strongly believes that education is not merely the acquisition of knowledge but a means for the development of moral values, ethical character, and cultural awareness among students.
Throughout his life, Honorable Shankarrao Jagtap devoted himself to the upliftment of the poor, downtrodden, farmers, labourers, and working-class communities of Koregaon Taluka. He recognized education as the most powerful instrument for social transformation.
His dream was to empower the sons and daughters of small and marginal farmers and landless labourers by providing them access to quality secondary and higher education within their own rural surroundings. To realize this vision, he established the Koregaon Education
Society as a beacon of hope for the mass community.
Koregaon Taluka is predominantly agrarian, and the majority of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihood. Due to economic constraints, lack of nearby educational institutions, and prevailing social conditions, many students—particularly girls—were deprived of secondary education and were compelled to discontinue their studies after the primary level. Understanding this pressing need, Shankarrao Jagtap (popularly known as Anna) laid special emphasis on girls’ education, recognizing its crucial role in the overall development of rural society.
In its formative years, the Society faced numerous challenges. However, with strong determination and the active participation of local villagers, the institution gradually took shape. Shri Shankarraoji Jagtap personally mobilized community support by creating awareness about the importance of education. Initially, the Vidyalayas were started in temples, private houses, and rented premises. The villagers responded wholeheartedly—some donated land, while others contributed financially or provided voluntary support for the construction of school buildings.
At present, the Koregaon Education Society successfully runs eight High Schools and one Senior College, catering to the educational needs of rural students. The High Schools are located in villages such as Dudhi–Nigadi, Palashi, Jaypur, Ambheri, Borgaon, Jalgaon, Chilewadi, and Vikhale in Koregaon Taluka. Today, all the High Schools are housed in their own permanent buildings, equipped with essential infrastructure, reflecting the collective efforts of the Society and the local community.
Through its sustained efforts over the years, Koregaon Education Society has emerged as a vital educational institution committed to inclusive education, social equity, and rural development, continuously striving to fulfill the dream of its founder by transforming lives through education.
